Public institutions offering services such as education, healthcare, municipal administration, management, community development, libraries, elderly care or planning are a third essential pillar of IDEAN‘s enabling technology dimension. In addition to their role as service providers, they act as brokers of common values and identity, embodying IDEAN‘s principles. Public institutions have a lighthouse role and status in society. This is reflected by their position and design. Moreover they are demand driven and citizen-friendly (e.g. in regards to opening times, access, and inclusiveness, and the ways in which they promote voluntarism and citizen participation). A special role is played by educational and cultural institutions. These provide intergenerational capacity building. Not-for-profit and Public-Private models help by promoting the quality of these services.
